History of medieval and renaissance
Medieval and Renaissance history
Medieval or Middle Ages is the European
historical period from the 5th to the 15th century (476-1453). The Middle Ages
marks the end of ancient history because of the fall of Rome. The next 1000
years marked the beginning of the Medieval (Medieval is the Latin word for
Middle Ages). The Middle Ages is referred to as the "Dark Ages" as there
were no scientific accomplishments that had been made, no great art produced, no
great leaders born. Also very little of people could actually read or write,
this was also thought that it could not be improved. The only sense of hope for
the people living in the Middle Ages, was their belief and faith in
Christianity. The artworks in the medieval time period were mostly focused on
religious aspects. The art movement of medieval consisted of Roman art, German
art, and Islamic art mixed together.
Renaissance is a European
historical time period in the 15th century (1350-1550). The Renaissance period
occur during the medieval times and also have similarities. Renaissance is a
French word that means "rebirth". The renaissance period is believed to be the
beginning of modern history. During the Renaissance European scholars began
studying the world around them and more realistic things. The renaissance began
in northern Italy and then spread throughout Europe. The Renaissance encouraged
and influenced paintings, sculptures and architecture. Paintings and such in the
renaissance were not as much influenced by religious aspects anymore and
concentrated on more realistic things. The Renaissance art movement was known
for four things, these were a respect for Classical Greek and Roman art forms
and style, a faith in the realism in humanism, The mastery of depth in a
painting and the natural realism of its faces and figures.
The historical context of the time period influenced the artistic representation of
Christ greatly, as the portrayal of Jesus still looks similar as the portrayals
of Jesus in the medieval and renaissance times. Also the detail given to Jesus
in the modern day has gone into deep depth, relating to the time period of the
Renaissance.
